KNOWLEDGE AND PRACTICE
How to use incense safely at home
Ventilation, a stable holder, a short burn time and complete extinguishing are the essentials of using incense with less risk.
Keep the air fresh
Use incense only in a well-ventilated room. Open a window before you begin and again after finishing. Smoke should not fill the room or make breathing uncomfortable. Stop and move to fresh air if you experience coughing, a headache or discomfort.
Use a stable, non-flammable holder
The holder should catch ash and sit away from fabric, paper, curtains, plants and the edge of a table. Do not carry glowing incense around the room unless falling ash can be controlled safely.
Never leave it unattended
Incense remains a heat source even when there is no visible flame. Do not leave the room or fall asleep, and keep it away from children and animals. Take particular care with Palo Santo and pieces that may begin glowing again.
A shorter burn may be enough
You do not need to burn a whole stick. A short period may be enough to create the atmosphere you want. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions on the specific product packaging.
Extinguish and check
After the practice, extinguish all embers, wait and check the holder before disposing of ash. If you cannot ventilate the room or have individual reasons to avoid smoke and fragrance, choose a practice without incense. This is general safety guidance, not medical advice.
